Computer Question

Post  gjknutsen on Fri Sep 09, 2011 8:00 pm

Why do games like League of Legends and Minecraft cause my graphics card to fail, but games like Space Marine and Crysis 2 do not?

My screen goes black, then comes back to normal, and says that my NVIDIA driver has failed and recovered.

This is getting REALLY annoying as sometimes it causes the game I'm playing to crash completely.

I have the absolute latest driver. I manually uninstalled the old one and installed the latest one.

It is not an issue with heat. My CPU and GPU temperatures are only slightly above idle temperatures during these games. I dismantled my laptop and cleaned all the dust out and it sits on a cooling fan.

I don't know anymore.

Usually I would give a snotty ATI Fanboy answer... but your a guildmate, so I found this;

"I'll sum it up; Minecraft does not play nice with NVidia graphics cards, because most NVidia graphics cards are integrated, which basically means that they run off your computer's RAM, instead of from the motherboard (I think its the motherboard..) So games like Minecraft already demand a ton of CPU/RAM usage, and combine that with the fact that even though the graphics are "retro", you have hundreds of blocks loaded at a time and so many different things happening in the world (Especially when you are generating new chunks) that your computer just cannot keep up, and therefore crashes minecraft/Video drivers. For me, I had a NVidia GEforce 9100, and it just wasn't cutting it for my gaming needs. I got an XFX - ATI RADEON HD 4650 1GB DDR2 PCI Express Graphics Card, and while it was a pain to set up (I am a total dunderhead at hardware.... ) it runs Minecraft pretty well-- 75 FPS on normal render distance, with a tiny bit of lag when generating new chunks, but not nearly as bad as NVidiaa."

Kinda pro ATI, but it's not snotty! LOL

Im not a PC gaming expert so the only reason I can think of is that Minecraft and League of Legends are powered by Java unlike Crysis 2 and Space Marines. So you might want to try re-installing Java and make sure you have the latest version.

Hope this helps.

Edit:
Looks like gestergren beat me to it and it seems like that is a much more likely reason. But still doesnt hurt to look into it being Java related.

Yea I found a lot of posts regarding Nvidia drivers and just copied what seemed to be one of the most common themes. I also found an entry stating it was "CUDA" in the latest drivers that was the problem. Hopefully it is just Java though.

Just updated Java. Had to use Internet Explorer 64bit in order to get the 64bit Java download.

Tested Minecraft and it wasn't crashing constantly. Will try League of Legends later.

Thanks all!

Just played a League game. 35 minutes. 2 visual hiccups. Compared to anywhere from 20-50 per game.

The hiccups still happen but they are WAY less frequent. We'll see if they continue to stay at such a low level.

Thanks for the help everyone! Very Happy

Another computer question... Would I gain anything (performance wise) by replacing my 2 -ATI 1 Gb 5870's,
with 1 -2 gb 6970? I understand thats its a newer card and better architecture, but I am concerned with ingame experience.
